The Caine Road Covered Bridge #35-04-59 is
located in Ashtabula County.
Built by the Ashtabula County Engineers Department at a cost of $191,000.00,
this bridge is rare precisely because it is new, unlike most other vintage
covered bridges commonly found in Ohio. It was finished in the fall of 1986,
and just like The Caine, Giddings, Netcher and State Road Covered Bridge's,
that are included in this study, these bridges were truly designed and built
to accommodate traffic, and not strictly for decoration or promotional purposes.
The Caine Road Covered Bridge is 275 feet long and was built with a Pratt
truss. This single span structure rests on concrete abutments and has a
long narrow window extending down both sides. The exterior is of salt treated
natural wood siding and galvanized connectors. |

The covered bridge spans a branch of the Ashtabula River. With an average
bed width of 125 feet, the Ashtabula river drains the northeast quarter
of Ashtabula county.
It is fascinating that the Caine Road Covered Bridge is one of only five
Pratt truss bridges in the United States, and the only one in Ohio. Designed
by Ashtabula County Engineer John Smolen, the bridge was dedicated at the
Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival on October 11.1986. |
